Council elections are upon us once again.
I am writing because, in many ways, this is an unusual election in that it has given rise to a large number of candidates this year. I believe there are a number of reasons for this: Firstly, the changes to the Professional Accountants Ordinance earlier this year, which created an extra 2 seats on Council; secondly, the disagreement between the Institute and ACCA concerning the continued recognition of their qualification; and thirdly, the Legco elections held earlier this year, which saw a record number of candidates and a record number of members participating in the election process.
The reason I am writing is to ask you to participate in the election by exercising your right to vote, and also to take a little time in deciding who you want to elect. The Institute is well on the way to creating a profession in Hong Kong that is world class. However, there continues to be much to do and we members need on Council people who, first and foremost, have the interests of Hong Kong and the Institute at heart. We need people who are prepared to commit the time necessary for the Institute to achieve all of its goals. We need people who have already demonstrated their commitment to the activities of the Institute. We need people on Council who are leaders and who provide thought leadership.
Again, I encourage you to exercise your vote this year, and when doing so I ask you to act diligently, taking into account the comments I have made above. |
