PLAYSTREET ∞ 2004

The Chater Road Pedestrian Precinct in the heart of bustling Central was transformed into a festive fun-filled playground on 12 December 2004, as the Hong Kong Institute of CPAs (HKICPA) and Playright Children's Play Association (Playright) co-organised the PlayStreet∞2004.

The event was a great success in bringing lots of fun and laughter to thousands of families and raising funds for the HKICPA Charitable Fund and Playright.

The opening ceremony of the event was officiated by The Hon. Frederick Ma, Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, The Hon. Mandy Tam, Legislative Councillor (Accountancy), Dr. The Hon. Kwok Ka-ki, Legislative Councillor (Medical), as well as Roger Best, HKICPA President (2004), Anne Marden, Playright's Hon. President, Winnie Cheung, HKICPA Chief Executive and Registrar, Dr. C.B. Chow, Playright's Chairperson, Kennedy Liu, HKICPA's Community Services Committee Chairman, and Kathy Wong, Playright's Executive Director.

Watch out for it - Cable TV Children's Channel has captured footage of PlayStreet in its Children's programme, "IQ雙拼", on Friday, 24 December 2004 at 5:30 - 6:30 pm.

THE HONG KONG ACCOUNTANT

In December 2004 issue of The Hong Kong Accountant...

Cover Story 1: The first principle of risk management – know your client
The nightmare scenario haunting many accountants today is the mega-lawsuit that can wipe out not only a partner, but also an entire firm. Things weren't always this way. A decade ago, such worries would rarely cross an accountant's mind. But in the post-Enron era, the prospect of legal claims has become a painful reality – one that is driving firms to overhaul their risk management practices and shore up their defenses against what could be a potential catastrophe

Cover Story 2: Limited liability partnerships may soon be a reality
Proposed legislation drafted by the Law Society of Hong Kong with the support of the HKICPA, would, for the first time, allow firms in the territory to form limited liability partnerships

IFAC places accountants centre stage
Newly elected IFAC President Graham Ward was HKICPA's guest of honour at its Annual Dinner in November. He took a few moments out to tell The Hong Kong Accountant IFAC will continue to strengthen its public interest role, focus on delivering quality throughout the profession and support the development of professional accounting, especially in emerging and developing economies

New auditing standards – firms should get ready for the change
HKICPA Technical Director (Ethics & Assurance) Stephen Chan explains the progress of converging Hong Kong Auditing Standards with International Auditing Standards and the new structure of Hong Kong Auditing Standards, and urges firms to make an early start to tackle the change

Reporting suspicions about proceeds of crime
In Hong Kong the Drug Trafficking (Recovery of Proceeds) Ordinance (Cap 405) and the Organised and Serious Crimes Ordinance (Cap 455) require persons to report their suspicions about property being the proceeds of crime or intended to be used for the commission of crime. This statutory duty applies to accountants who are used by money launderers

Tax implications of HKAS 39: Financial Instruments, Recognition and Measurement

New features of the draft PRC Bankruptcy Law and new opportunities for Hong Kong accountants

TECHNICAL UPDATE EVENING

Technical Update Evening (TUE) – January 2005 sessions

The January 2005 TUE sessions feature a number of important new auditing standards, including:

New Audit Risk Standards Introduce Risk-Based Audit Approach ( 10 January 2005 ) (Re-run)
21 Replacement Hong Kong Auditing Standards ( 17 January 2005 ) (new).

The new and replacement Hong Kong Auditing Standards are adopted by the HKICPA under its International Standards Convergence Project to converge Hong Kong Auditing Standards with International Auditing Standards.

The new Audit Risk Standards enable auditors to more clearly focus on areas where there is a greater risk of misstatement of the financial statements. It is anticipated that implementation of the new Audit Risk Standards will increase the quality of audits by improving the linkage of audit procedures and assessed risks.

The replacement Hong Kong Auditing Standards adopt verbatim their latest equivalent International Auditing Standards that have been revised by the IAASB to reflect the conforming changes introduced by the new Audit Risk Standards, new Quality Control Standards and revised Fraud Consideration Standard.

To secure your seats, please register early by completing the registration form and returning it to the HKICPA.
