Tsang promises support for the profession
n 30 May, Institute President Paul Chan joined other professionals to meet with HKSAR CE Donald Tsang to discuss opportunities arising from CEPA and the 11th Five-Year Plan. Chan raised the profession's wish list:

Extension of mutual exam paper exemption to non QP members
Allowing Hong Kong and mainland firms to form associations

Chan also mentioned liability reform, in which Tsang is positive to LLP and proportional liability proposals. Tsang says the government will help professions explore new niches in the mainland by enriching CEPA and expanding a network of professional services. Click here for the government's press release.

PRC M&A symposium
he Institute and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University's symposium, "Mergers and Acquisitions in the Mainland," on 26 May attracted 200 participants. Expert speakers came from the Guangdong State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, merchant and investment banks, fund management and law firms, and mainland and local accounting practices. Outstanding CPAs in community services
he Institute is calling for nominees for the "Outstanding Accountant Ambassadors Awards" to recognize accomplishments in community services. Winners will receive $10,000 for donation to a charitable organisation in his or her name. The judging panel is comprised of social service celebrities and senior government officials. Dragon boat team is first runner-up

he Institute's dragon boat team was the first runner-up in the Discovery Bay Races on 31 May and ranked sixth in the Professional Championship in the Hong Kong International Dragon Boat races on 3-4 June. Congratulations to all CPA paddlers who have practiced since March.

TechWatch
The latest issue of TechWatch features the TUE and CPD activities for June and July and an invitation to comment on IASC Foundation's consultation document. It also includes the Institute's submissions, international meetings and IFAC recent developments.
IFAC meeting update
IFAC held its Board meeting last week in Beijing, saying it will take action to support SMEs, professional accountants in business and developing countries in standards convergence. The Board agreed to host the 2010 World Congress of Accountants in Kuala Lumpur. On behalf of the Institute, Eric Li, an IFAC Board member, and Chief Executive Winnie Cheung, a technical advisor, attended the meeting. Please click here for the IFAC press release.
