Top QP candidates in the May 2007 session

Module A (Financial Reporting)
¡E Top prize winner Tam Wai Shing obtained his Bachelor of Science in Physics from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2004. He is now an accountant at KPMG.

Study tips: "Read the questions carefully during the examination. Remember to stay focused and answer precisely. Don't waste your time on copying irrelevant materials from the candidate learning pack. Also, remember to keep track of your time during the examination. Don't spend too much time on a single question. Usually the suggested time should be enough for you to get a decent mark for that question."

Module C (Auditing and Information Management)
¡E Top prize winner Lau Sin Ki, Carrol obtained her Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from the University of Toronto in 2005. She is now a staff accountant II at Ernst & Young.

Study tips: "There are different study habits. For me, I start preparation early. As it is very tough to juggle with work, study and other obligations, I believe time management is the key to success. Believe me, there is always enough time. It just depends on how well we allocate time.

My advice is to develop a study plan based on the special topics and the workshop syllabus listed out in the candidate learning pack. There is no need to memorize the auditing standards, but you need to be familiar with them since the examination focuses on their application. You should go through past examination questions in your study plan as they provide you with a basis on how to tackle the questions. Remember practice makes perfect."

¡E Top prize winner Lee Tat Yeung obtained his Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2006. He is now an accountant at KPMG.

Study tips: "Studying with colleagues and friends is an effective way of learning from each other as well as discovering areas for which further attention is needed. Everyone may feel discouraged at times. A study group can "refuel" your motivation and make studying more fun.

Apart from studying all the reference materials, more importantly is to apply what you have learned to your workplace. Auditing is a very practical paper and on-the-job training is the most effective means of understanding the underlying auditing concepts. I hope you find these tips helpful and wish you all every success in your examinations."

There are four types of brackets, namely round, square, curvy and angled brackets. You use round brackets to enclose extra information or to indicate alternatives. Square brackets are used to indicate an insertion in a piece of quoted text to clarify something for the reader. As for the last two brackets, they are rarely used in business writing.

Gillian Christine, a freelance editor and proof-reader, gives you some guidelines on how to use round and square brackets appropriately. Click here for the full article.
