As companies recognise that their human capital is a major asset, they need to identify, evaluate and manage that asset. This philosophy is pursued by PKF Hong Kong, a member firm of PKF International, which offers a range of professional accountancy, consultancy and business advisory services.

Ms. Amy Hui, partner of PKF Hong Kong, believes that attracting, selecting and retaining staff with the right skills and qualifications is at the heart of human resources management. A strong team can bring quality service to clients and financial success for a company. As the member-in-charge under the Institute's AE scheme, Amy praises the Institute's Qualification Programme (QP) for helping it to attract more high quality staff to join the firm.

On designing its own training, PKF makes sure that it is in-line with the QP. In fact, they complement each other. The underlying purpose is to instil technical knowledge as new rules and standards continue to proliferate. Moreover, today's professionals also need communication and problem solving skills, and QP workshops and examinations have been designed to meet that need. Click here for details.

Do we attach enough importance to the development of emotional intelligence in the workplace, asks Lesley Stalker, head of tax at the Robert James Partnership of the United Kingdom.

Lesley views that emotional quotient (EQ) becomes more important to accountants as they get more involved in business strategies nowadays. To find out more about the benefits of EQ and steps to building EQ in an organization, please click here for the full article.

Acquiring both technical knowledge and management skills are important to every professional. What else do employers expect of their staff? Always act in the employer's best interests. Employees should not engage in any activities which would injure the employer's business. As QP registered students, there is an obligation to practice in a professional and ethical manner that will reflect credit on themselves and the profession. Below are some suggestions for employees to uphold a positive work attitude in their workplace:

  • Show a strong commitment to the assigned duties.
  • Keep promises that are made to others.
  • Be diligent and honest towards work.
  • Be punctual at work and meet assignment deadlines.
  • Respect others to maintain a good and harmonious working relationship.
  • Be friendly by offering help and taking care of others who are in need.
  • Work productively with accuracy.
  • Be responsible and willing to take up extra duties.

    QP scholarships for year 2008

Congratulations to the 15 QP scholarship recipients for year 2008. Click here for the list of scholarship recipients. The Institute received a total of 52 nominations for this year's QP scholarships. The examinations board's scholarships selection panel shortlisted 27 outstanding nominees for interviews and subsequently recommended awarding the scholarships to 12 outstanding undergraduates and three postgraduates students. The QP scholarships awards will be presented at the Institute's annual award and graduation ceremony to be held on 5 September 2008.

With a view to encourage high-calibre Chinese Institute of Certified Public Accountants (CICPA) members to get the HKICPA membership, the Institute set up a joint QP scholarship programme with CICPA for their members. These scholarships are awarded annually from the year 2008 onwards. The aims of the scholarships are to recognize excellent professional competence; to encourage top notch CICPA members to pursue an internationally recognsied accountancy qualification; and to promote greater co-operation between the Mainland and Hong Kong accountancy professions.

The scholarships selection panel, comprising representatives of both Institutes, conducted a rigorous interview for the shortlisted nominees in Beijing in May 2008, and recommended to award the Scholarships to five outstanding candidates.

Click here for the list of recipients of the 2008 HKICPA/CICPA joint QP scholarships.
