President’s message

President Patrick LAW

Developed as home-grown, professional accounting qualification the Qualification Programme has since become one of Hong Kong’s leading professional qualifications. What began in 1999 with 99 students, now has a studentship of over 17,000, and the first graduate has been joined by over 22,000 others.

For presidents of the Institute, the QP is a vitally important consideration. It is how we promote our profession and how we ensure that new accountants are trained in the skills they need for career success. I offer my big thank you to my predecessors for their enlightened leadership and dedication.

The success of the QP owes a lot to the contributions and dedication of many people over the years. This dedication has helped to develop a programme suitable for training accountants with the skills needed for success in the ever-changing business world.

I would also like to thank the Institute members who have volunteered their time to the various committees focused on the QP, such as the Qualification and Examinations Board, the Qualification Oversight Board and its predecessors including the Professional Qualifications Accountability Board.

Also, a special thanks to those members who have served over the years as QP examiners and workshop facilitators. Without their dedication and support the QP would not have achieved the success we are now celebrating.

The QP’s recognition as one of Hong Kong’s leading professional qualifications is because of the dedicated efforts of all our members. Not just as employers, or as QP markers or committee members – but also as model examples of the success of how becoming a Hong Kong’s CPAs leads to professional achievements. Our members demonstrate how being an accountant can be a rewarding career, which assists with our city’s development.

And the QP’s status also relies upon our partners in academia. The Institute works closely with university deans and accounting programme directors in Hong Kong, Mainland China, and overseas, to ensure that university students on accredited degree programmes gain the prerequisite knowledge needed for the QP, and career success as Hong Kong CPAs. The support of these partners also provides opportunities to reach students on campus, and to instil in them the benefits of studying the QP.

Finally, I would like to thank the entrants to the anniversary logo design competition for their creativity.

The business world has changed since the release of the programme and even the last enhancement. Increasingly, our clients and employers require us to be no longer just accountants, but Accountants Plus – who must deliver more.  Accountants Plus must work closely with other professions, with new technologies, and with new types of clients with new problems and demands. The new QP will help to ensure that students obtain the training they need for success in this new world.

I hope you will continue to support the Qualification Programme as we go on this new exciting journey together – for the profession’s future.

Patrick Law
