Is there any special focus in workshops under the new QP?

 

Ans.

The new QP will put more emphasis on ethical training by designing learning and development activities in the workshops, in particular, the Capstone workshops to raise students' ethical capabilities.  The focus of the ethical training is on identifying ethical dilemmas, understanding their implications and developing professional solutions.

 

Employers are looking for professional accountants who possess higher-order skills such as critical thinking, professional scepticism and business acumen.  The Capstone is designed to develop the higher-order skills so that students can think laterally to identify complex problems and develop multifaceted solutions which are vital to succeed in a career as a professional accountant.  Such skills can be trained effectively after students have acquired knowledge from all technical modules including workshops.

 

Q2.

Is there any difference in the structure of the module workshops under the new QP as compared with the current QP?

 

Ans.

The workshops in the new QP will be configured into a format of 8 full-day workshops, one at the introduction to the Professional Level, one for each Professional Module and three for the Capstone. 

 

 

Q3.

Is there any change in the number of workshop days under the new QP?

 

Ans.

No change in the total number of workshop days, i.e. 8 full days:-

 

Current QP: 2-day workshops for each of the four modules.

 

New QP: 1-day for introductory workshop, 1-day workshop for each Professional Module, and 3-day workshops for the Capstone.

 

 

Q4.

What language will be used in workshop?

 

Ans.

English will be the official language. 

 

 

Q5.

Will workshops be conducted in Mainland China?   

 

Ans.

Yes, workshops will be conducted in the major cities of Mainland China.

 

 

Q6.

What are the requirements to complete the workshops?  Is there aggregate mark policy for workshops and examination in the Professional Level and the Capstone under the new QP?

 

Ans.

For the Professional Level, no aggregate mark policy applies for workshops and examinations.  Workshop and examination for each module are separately assessed. 

 

For the Capstone Level, aggregate mark policy applies for workshops and the Final Examination.  Students are required to meet the overall assessment of the three full-day workshops and the Final Examination.

 

 

Introductory workshop

 

Q7.

What is the purpose of the introductory workshop?

 

Ans.

The introductory workshop is to ensure all students to have a basic level of competence for the core enabling competences and the awareness of ethics.  In addition, it ensures students to have a thorough understanding on the Professional Level and the Capstone.  Students are required to take this workshop before enrolling in the technical modules in the Professional Level.

 

 

Q8.

What is the format of the introductory workshop?

 

Ans.

The introductory workshop is a one day face-to-face workshop.

 

 

Q9.

When can I take the introductory workshop?

 

Ans.

Upon completion of the Associate Level and for those students with degree qualification who have been granted exemption for 8 or more modules in the Associate Level whereby they can do cross-level examination enrollment to the Professional Level.

 

 

Q10.

Is there any examination for the introductory workshop?

 

Ans.

No, but students are required to complete the introductory workshop before they can enroll in the technical modules of the Professional Level. 

 

 

Q11.

If I did not complete the introductory workshop, can I enroll into the module examination as completion of workshop is only a preferred sequence?

 

Ans.

No, preferred sequence only applies to the technical modules and students are required to complete the introductory workshop before they can enroll in the technical modules of the Professional Level.

 

 

Q12.

Is there any limitation on the number of attempts for introductory workshop?

 

Ans.

There is no limit on the number of attempts for introductory workshop.

 

 

Q13.

If I am existing QP student, do I need to take the introductory workshop under the new QP?

 

Ans.

No, existing QP students can enroll in the Professional Modules of the new QP straight away.

 

 

Q14.

Can I enroll in the introductory workshop and technical module workshop at the same time?

 

Ans.

No, students are required to complete the introductory workshop before enrolling in the technical module of the Professional Level.

 

 

Module Workshops

 

Q15.

What is the purpose of workshops in the Professional Modules?

 

Ans.

The objectives of workshops in the four Professional Modules are:

 

(a)  Develop candidates' skills to research, solve and analyze problems; apply technical knowledge in practical scenarios;

       learn from the experiences of their peers and workshop facilitators; gain a better understanding and further insight of

       learning materials through discussion in workshops;

 

(b)  Provide the opportunity for students to develop the core enabling competences; and

 

(c)   Assist students to get prepared for the module examinations. 

 

 

Q16.

What is the format of the module workshops?

 

Ans.

The modules will have 4 full-day, face-to-face workshops supplemented with interactive online materials.  The workshops will include simulations, case studies and performance tasks.

 

 

Q17.

When can I take the module workshops?

 

Ans.

After the completion of the introductory workshop, students are eligible to enroll in the technical modules and attend the module workshops.

 

 

Q18.

When will the Professional Modules be offered?

 

Ans.

The Professional Modules under the new QP will be offered concurrently in two sessions, with examinations held in June and December of each year, starting from December 2019.  The detailed schedule for each session will be announced in due course.

 

 

Q19.

Can I take examination before workshop in the Professional Modules?

 

Ans.

Yes, however, completion of the workshop before sitting the relevant module examination is a preferred sequence.

 

 

Q20.

If I am absent from the module workshop, can I sit the corresponding module examination?

 

Ans.

Yes, workshop is not a pre-requisite to sitting the module examination but completion of the workshop before sitting the relevant module examination is a preferred sequence.

 

 

Q21.

Would I need to retake workshops if I have reached the maximum number of attempt for the module examination? 

 

Ans.

There is no need to retake the completed module workshops.  The four-attempt rule applies to module examination only.     

 

 

Q22.

If I cannot attend the full-day workshops, what should I do?

 

Ans.

Students can apply for special consideration and the HKICPA will assess the circumstance on a case-by-case basis.  Details will be announced in the Student Handbook.

 

 

Q23.

How many module workshops can I take for the same examination session?

 

Ans.

Students can select and take the four modules in any order.  However, a maximum of two modules can be taken in the first attempt with no restriction on the number of module enrolments for re-sit.

 

 

Q24.

I am a QP student and have completed workshops under the current QP.   Do I need to complete workshops under the new QP?

 

Ans.

Under the cross-credit arrangement, the pass that students have obtained for a module under the current QP will be deemed to be a pass for the corresponding module of the new QP.  QP students who have passed the technical workshops but not the examination of the remaining module(s) of the current QP will not be required to attend the workshop of the corresponding Professional Module(s) of the new QP.

 

 

Q25.

Can I use the existing Learning Pack of the current QP for preparing the module workshops of the new QP, or do I need to buy the updated version?

 

Ans.

The module syllabuses are revised under the new QP.  Students should use the new Learning Pack to prepare for the workshops under the new QP.

 

 

Capstone Workshops

 

Q26.

What is the purpose of the Capstone workshops?

 

Ans.

The objectives of the Capstone workshops are:

 

(a)      Develop candidates' ability to integrate and apply knowledge and skills from the technical modules and practical

          experience;

 

(b)      Further develop the enabling competences; and

 

(c)      Develop and assess higher-order enabling skills such as problem solving, critical and lateral thinking to enhance

          students' ability to identify complex problems including aspects of ethical dilemma and to develop professional

          solutions.

 

 

Q27.

What is the format of the Capstone workshops?

 

Ans.

The Capstone comprises 3 full-day, face-to-face workshops supplemented with interactive online materials and a Final Examination.  The workshops will include simulations, case studies and assessment tasks.  Students are required to demonstrate their achievement of the prescribed learning outcomes and meet the assessment criteria of the workshops.  Full attendance of the Capstone workshops is a prerequisite to sit the Final Examination.

When can I take the Capstone?

 

Ans.

Upon completion of both the Associate and Professional Levels.

 

 

Q29.

When will the Capstone be offered?

 

Ans.

The Capstone under the new QP will be offered concurrently in two sessions, with examinations held in June and December of each year, starting from June 2020.  The detailed schedule for each session will be announced in due course.

What will be involved in the Capstone workshop?

The 3 full-day Capstone workshops will include simulations, case studies and assessment tasks, which require students to think laterally to identify complex problems and develop multifaceted solutions.  There will also be added emphasis on ethical training to enhance the higher-skill training of the students. 

 

 

Q31.

Can I take the Final Examination before Capstone workshops?

 

Ans.

No, full attendance of the Capstone workshops is a prerequisite to sit the Final Examination.

 

 

Q32.

What would happen if I cannot complete the Capstone workshops satisfactorily?

 

Ans.

Students will be allowed to sit the Final Examination while their scores in the assessment tasks of the Capstone workshops will be included in the overall results of the Capstone.

 

 

Q33.

What would happen if I cannot pass the Capstone?

 

Ans.

Students who have failed the Capstone will be required to retake the Capstone (i.e. both workshops and the Final Examination).

 

 

Q34.

Why would students need to retake the Capstone workshop if they fail the Capstone under the new QP?

 

Ans.

The Capstone is integrated and comprised of three full-day workshops and the Final Examination.  Students are required to complete the assessment tasks across the Capstone and meet the overall assessment in order to complete the Capstone.  Completion of the Capstone provides a formal verification that students can demonstrate a required competent-practitioner level of performance.  Students who fail to achieve the overall assessment will therefore be required to retake the Capstone, i.e. both the workshops and the Final Examination.
